Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member in a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the actual ocean and not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who connect with their families until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. Lolita's Diet

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean, perhaps even being reunited with her mother orca. Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
